Esgyn
‘Esgyn’ is the name of the Baptist Union of Wales’ youth initiative, designed for young people in our churches and communities.
‘Esgyn’ (Welsh for: ‘Ascend’) is all about creating an opportunity for young people to come together and build relationships with one another, whilst also discovering more about the adventure of knowing God…

The Story so Far
We started the ‘Esgyn’ adventure with a Youth Weekend in February 2024, at an amazing venue: the Rock UK Summit Centre, Treharris in South Wales. Little did we expect the amazing response from churches, young people and the amazing team that formed – and we have returned for weekends ever since!
We are delighted to announce that as of 2026, we are expanding our provision to two youth weekends! We will continue our original weekend for 11-16 year olds at the Summit Centre, alongside another new ‘Esgyn Plus’ Weekend for 16-21 year olds based in St David’s, Pembrokeshire.
Esgyn Youth Weekend (11-16s)
The Esgyn Youth Weekend will return to The Summit Centre, Treharris this year on the 20th – 22nd of November. The weekend will kick off on Friday evening and run through ‘till Sunday afternoon, with a chance for young people to:
Enjoy the amazing activities available at the Rock UK Summit Centre –
including some NEW options this year e.g hill-walk, bush-craft, archery,
high ropes and climbing…
Enjoy times of worship, community, and good food!
Team building activities and games…
Time just to hang out and rest (and maybe have some sleep)!
There will be Welsh-language provision, and the weekend will run bilingually wherever possible.

Price of the weekend: £98
The weekend has been subsidized considerably again this year by the BUW and partners (down from a full price of c.£170), and further help can be offered with a bursary (bringing the weekend cost down to £50), so we do not want finance to be a barrier for anyone who wants to come to the Esgyn weekend.

NEW: Esgyn Plus (16-21 year olds)
We are hugely excited this year to announce the launch of ‘Esgyn Plus’: a new Esgyn stream for 16-21 year olds!
You may have grown up with the Esgyn weekends, or are ready for a new adventure – either way, we would love to have you join us! This is a new experience for older youth who want to go a little deeper in their journeys of faith and discipleship with Jesus.
We will be launching this year in St David’s, Pembrokeshire – from the 18th – 20th of September.
We will be based at St David’s Bunk Barns (just outside the small cathedral city), with a varied programme, including:
Optional Adventure Activities (e.g Coasteering and Paddleboarding)
Times of worship, community, and good food!
Visiting St David’s
Team building activities and games
Beach Trips
… as well as plenty of times to rest and re-charge
The weekend will run bilingually wherever possible.

A vision for a new generation…
The theme of ‘Esgyn’ (Welsh for: ‘ascend’) speaks of embarking on an adventure together in community, looking to the exciting heights of following Jesus surrounded by fellow travelers, while also being aware of the need to navigate life’s ‘everyday’ valleys with Him, in our 21st century Welsh context…
The hope is that ‘Esgyn’ will:
- Help build connections between young people in Wales
- Encourage each young person in their own discipleship and walk with Jesus
- Build lasting community for years to come.
