Over a thousand miles now WALK!-ed…

Churches and individuals across the BUW family have successfully walked over a thousand miles (1090.35 to be precise!) to raise money and support for communities in Zimbabwe suffering from the effects of climate change. This total is well over the original 750 mile target – marking a huge success!

All parts of the country

Individuals and groups walked in all parts of Wales to raise money. The Cylch Carn Ingli churches in north Pembrokeshire, for instance, came together on the first Sunday of August to hold walks along some of the Gwaun Valley trails with 16 of them walking three and a half miles, nine walking two miles and a further nine taking part in a mile-long walk. Everyone finished in the Jabes chapel vestry where the day was topped off by a Power point presentation talking about the appeal. After that, all congregated around the tables for a delicious tea. And through the efforts of the Cylch Carn Ingli walkers we were able to add 83 miles to the walking total and £830 was raised towards the appeal.

In south Pembrokeshire, a crew from Mount Pleasant church walked in the Stackpole and Bosherston areas, while another group got together in Colwyn Bay – on the north coast. Perhaps the prize for the greatest effort, however, goes to Llinos, who circled the Pembrokeshire coast, roamed the Dyfed hills and took in the Anglesey coast path on her travels!

Final steps for the appeal

Huge thanks therefore to all who took part in this journey – by walking, by organizing and in prayer. More than £15,000 has already been received at the BUW offices, all of which will go to Christian Aid – but there is still time to gather in money and send it through before we close the appeal.

So between now and Christmas we have one final fundraising opportunity to celebrate everyone’s walking achievements:

  • You can raise sponsorship money for the miles you have walked. (e.g you can customize the JustGiving Hope Talents page here for your own efforts).
  • You can ask for donations from those who have come on tour – or who haven’t but want to support regardless.
  • You can provide treats e.g baking cakes, or organising an event to mark the end of the journey.
  • Use the Talents of Hope appeal resources to educate people at your church about the work of Christian Aid partners in Zimbabwe, and how they can help.
  • Or send a cheque to: Welsh Baptist Union, Y Llwyfan, College Road, Carmarthen, SA31 3EQ making the cheques payable to the ‘Baptist Union of Wales‘ and writing ‘Christian Aid Appeal’ on the back (please note that we cannot receive Gift Aid declarations by this method)

Thank you!
